Westville Boys’ High’s tradition of academic excellence continued in the 2022 matric final examinations with 33 boys achieving A aggregates, headed by Umar Kharwa and Troye Swan, who both received eight distinctions and were among the top achievers in KwaZulu-Natal.
In 2022, Umar won the WBHS Life Sciences Award, while Troye received the Mathematics and Creative Spirit Awards. Both learners were among the top achievers recognised and interviewed by The Daily News following the release of the matric results.
Umar told the newspaper that he intends to study actuarial sciences at the University of Cape Town this year. Troye, meanwhile, will take a gap year before heading to Stellenbosch University to study electrical engineering.
Besides the 33 boys who achieved A aggregates, a further 75 boys finished with B aggregates. Behind Umar’s and Troye’s eight distinctions, 11 boys recorded seven distinctions, nine boys received six distinctions, another nine had five A aggregates, and nine, again, had four distinctions.
In total, Westville boys recorded 338 subject distinctions, which worked out to 1.5 per boy, with 92 percent of those who wrote the exams earning university exemptions.
