Michaelhouse 1sts win on day of tough basketball battles

Michaelhouse and Kearsney College, traditionally two of Kwazulu-Natal’s strongest basketball schools did battle in 22 games on Saturday, 21 January, with Michaelhouse enjoying the better of the open age and under-16 contests, while Kearsney did better at under-15 and under-14 level.

The honours in the big game, that between the 1^st teams, though, went the way of Michaelhouse. They dominated the clash in the first two stanzas with stifling defence and it was to the credit of Kearsney that they managed to break the shackles somewhat in the latter stages of the clash to end with a reasonable scoreline – 62-41 – that, admittedly, still comfortably favoured the home team.

At the open level, Michaelhouse won all the way through to the 4^th team before Kearsney’s 5^th and 6^th teams claimed victories. Michaelhouse, however, secured another win in the clash of the 7^th teams to capture five open age group wins to two.

Michaelhouse also won the u16A and u16B games, but Kearsney edged the u16C game by two points before ‘House added two more wins in the u16D and u16E contests to finish with four wins to one in the age group.

The hosts were also victorious in the clash of the u15A sides, but Kearsney won the remaining three games in the age group.

The Botha’s Hill boys added another five wins in a clean sweep at under-14 level.

After a day of great competition, Michaelhouse won 10 games to Kearsney’s 12, but picked up three out of four wins in the frontline clashes of the 1^st team, u16A, u15A and u14A teams.
