As much as anything else, the first term’s first basketball games were an opportunity for the new grade 8 boys of Maritzburg College and Westville Boys’ High School to experience first-hand a derby clash, with some of them playing a competitive game for the very first time. Thus it was that eight under-14 games were played, right down to the H team.
College emerged with the cleaner record after those clashes, including wins for the A, B and C teams, but Westville claimed victories in the under-15 A and B games, as well as the under-16 A and B games. The College C team, however, stopped the visitors’ run of success with the closest win of the day, claiming a 24-23 victory.
Meanwhile, in the showcase event, the College 1st team recorded a decisive 91-69 win. They started well and pulled clear before a little spurt from Westville momentarily had the visitors 13-12 ahead. From that point on, however, College owned the contest, and the further it extended the more they edged clear of the feisty Westville line-up.
Westville’s 2nd team took a hard-fought victory, but the remainder of the open age group games went the way of the hosts, who managed to withstand a determined challenge from their opponents.
