There was only one inter-schools summer derby on the go in KZN over the weekend, with Michaelhouse visiting St Charles College.
CRICKET
Unfortunately, the weather prediction was right. Huge thunder storms put paid to most of Saturday’s cricket matches, but three games were finished, with each of them going ‘House’s way.
The 1st XI clash was evenly poised when it was brought to an end. It had been an interesting back-and-forth contest up until that point.
Batting first, Michaelhouse made a good start, with Sebastian Hofmeyr and Graydon Leslie sharing an opening stand of 61 before Hofmeyr was out to the first ball of the seventeenth over, caught by Rowen Rajah off of Tristan Montile‘s bowling for 41 from 54 balls, which included four fours and a six.
Leslie went on to make 27. His was the third wicket to fall, with Cian Fortmann bowling the opener when the total had reached 75. Unfortunately for the visitors, they lost another two wickets in quick succession, which left them wobbling on 86/5.
Radhesh Jhilmeet and Ben Heuer steadied the innings, however, adding 42 before Jhilmeet was LBW to Saints’ skipper Marcell Wellmann for 18.
Heuer didn’t receive much more support, but he did a superb job on his own, going on to finish with an unbeaten 74 from 89 deliveries as Michaelhouse posted 183 all out. He had struck eight fours and a six.
The wickets were shared around. Cian Fortmann shone, knocking over 2/18 in 10, while new ball bowler, Rowen Rajah, challenged the ‘House batsmen and wound up with 2/29 from nine. Tristan Montile played his part, capturing 2/28 from seven, and Marcell Wellmann snared 2/24 in 4.3.
Saints found themselves on the back foot early on in their reply, with their openers, Cian Fortmann and Connor Riley, the heroes of their win over Kearsney the previous weekend, both out before the total had reached double figures.
They were reduced to 24/3 when Ross Moller picked up his second wicket, dismissing Kwanele Nqayi, but St Charles, then, advanced to 48/3, with Marcell Wellmann on 20 from 25 balls, with four fours, and Rico Honiball on 11, before the weather intervened.
Ross Moller had claimed 2/21 in six, and Thandanani Zuma finished with 1/23, also from six.

The Saints 1st basketball team put together a good end-of-season performance to record a comfortable16-point victory over Michaelhouse. They got their noses in front and answered every time ‘House tried to make inroads into the home side’s lead.
Overall, Michaelhouse did well in the open age group, losing only the 1st team game. The visitors also won two of the three u16 matches and four of the five u15 games. They never quite managed a clean sweep, though, with Michaelhouse winning three of five in the u14 age group.
