Solid batting and a star turn with the ball from Ewan du Toit steered Westville Boys’ High to an emphatic 121-run win over Northwood in a limited overs match on Bowden’s on Saturday.
The Griffins put together a healthy number of telling partnerships, which took them to 259/7. On Bowden’s that’s a strong effort, and the Knights, after a good start to their innings, suffered a collapse, which led to them sliding to 138 all out in reply.
Westville captain Nicandro Kistna and Max Robertson did a good job up front, recording a 55-run partnership for the first wicket. It took a run out to prise them apart, with Pride Buthelezi pulling it off to get rid of the skipper for 31 from 46 balls, which had included five fours.
Robertson and Seth Simpson added 42 before Robertson’s innings was ended by Ben Cilliers, who bowled the opener for 36 from 57. He’d hit a six and three fours.
Simpson and Kaeden McAllister kept up the momentum with another good partnership, the highest of the Westville innings, of 76 runs. Cilliers, then, struck again, bowling Simpson one run shy of a fifty.
When McAllister fell for 54 from 74, after hitting a six and five fours, Westville was on 199/5.
There was more to come from the hosts, though, and Kyle McGough went after the Knights’ bowlers, blasting a six and three fours in his 32 from 22. Roxton Payne made his mark, too, contributing 22 not out from 20.
Ben Cilliers bowled well to return 2/32 from nine overs, while Luke Allen also removed two batsmen, picking up 2/46 from seven.
Northwood’s openers, David de Bruyn and Tuswa Phetha gave the Durban school a good start to their run chase, sharing an opening stand of 46 before De Bruyn was caught off Ewan du Toit for 20 from 26.
Phetha made the Westville bowlers work hard for his wicket, but Du Toit eventually earned it, with Phetha dismissed for 32 from 61 balls, which had included three fours.
Kyle White was run out for only two and Du Toit was at it again one run later when he trapped Mfana Shange in front for nine, which reduced the visitors to 70/4.
Soon, that became 80/6, with Du Toit completing a five-four by adding the wickets of Ross McGlashan and Mason Storm.
Northwood finally found some purchase when Luke Allen joined Alistair Duncan at the crease. Together, they compiled the best partnership of the Knights’ innings, advancing the total by 47 runs to 127. But, then, they both departed without the addition of a run.
Westville skipper Nicandro Kistna got rid of Duncan for 29 from 54, while Sekou Shangase accounted for Allen, out for a useful 25 from 29, which had included two fours and a six.
Kistna struck again, trapping Jordan Matthews LBW, to leave Northwood nine-down.
The seldom-used Max Robertson, then, claimed the last wicket as Northwood folded for 138.
Ewan du Toit’s return was a fantastic 5/19 from 10 overs, with four maidens, while Nicandro Kistna snapped up 2/23 in six. While he didn’t pick up a wicket, Roxton Payne tied down the visitors’ batsmen and heaped pressure on their run rate by claiming 0/23 from 10 overs.
