CRICKET
Glenwood 1st XI cricket captain Ntando Soni starred for the visitors, as they inflicted a 55-run defeat on Northwood on the Robin Smith Oval in Durban on Saturday.
After winning the toss, Soni chose to bat first. Glenwood lost an early wicket, but Krian Jugoo, in at three, took the game to Northwood, striking seven fours and a six in an innings of 49 from 70 balls, which gave the visitors’ innings a positive jolt.
SA Schools’ opening bowler Soni, whose batting has come on in leaps and bounds in 2024, also made a vital contribution, scoring 47 from 52 balls, six of which he struck for four.
Bandile Mbatha, who, like Soni, was recently named in the Dolphins’ Khaya Majola Week team, weighed in with 25, which helped lift the Green Machine to 188 all out, with the last wicket going down in the 49th of their 50 overs.
Northwood’s Mason Storm got in among the wickets, picking up 4/43 from 8.5 overs, while Kyle White kept it tight and returned 2/22 from his quota of overs, while Ben Erasmus did a good job, too, claiming 2/33 from 10.
From the start of Northwood’s reply, Glenwood skipper Soni found something in the pitch, achieving good bounce and carry. A fuller ball, though, brought him a wicket in the first over, when he bowled Alistair Duncan.
Mfana Shange, one of two Northwood players to make the Khaya Majola side (the other was Nqobani Mokoena), kept Glenwood at bay, patiently accumulating 56 runs from 103 balls before he fell to the left-arm spinner Sibonelo Phewa.
When he departed, the Knights slipped to 86/3, but the slide continued as they quickly fell to 91/6, with four wickets going down for only five runs.
Luke Allen and Kyle White added 20 runs to the total, but then, on Nelson, Northwood lost two wickets, with Allen caught off Soni for seven and Jordan Matthews lasting only one ball against the skilful quick bowler.
White’s resistance lasted until the total had reached 128, which is when Soni trapped him LBW for a solid 53 from 86 balls, which had included six fours. Soni soon knocked over a fifth Northwood batsman to end the home side’s innings on 133.
The Glenwood captain finished with an outstanding 5/15 from 8.4 overs and was well supported by Sibonelo Phewa, who took 2/30, and Bandile Mbatha, who claimed 2/40. Kyle Bryan bowled a tight 10 overs, conceding only 14 runs while picking up the other wicket.
