Westville vs Clifton results, YT basketball highlights, 26 Oct

28 October 2024

Westville Boys’ High hosted Clifton College on Saturday and the Griffins were given quite the battle by the visitors’ 1st basketball team before a spurt after halftime took them clear.

Clifton came out of the blocks strongly and raced into an early lead. Bit by bit, though, Westville clawed their way back into the contest and soon overhauled Clifton. When they drew 26-19 clear, it appeared as if that gap was going to keep growing, the contest done and dusted.

With their big man Lukhanyiso Nala leading the way, Clifton fought back strongly, however, and levelled at 26-26. It was 31-31 only moments before the half-time whistle when Westville sank a two-pointer to edge ahead at the break.

The home side came out firing in the second stanza and soon built up a 10-point lead. This time Clifton had no answers and Westville gradually added to their lead until they had run out 76-56 winners.

The Westville 1st team, over the past couple of seasons, has become one of the top basketball units in KZN, able to go toe-to-toe with sides like Maritzburg College and Northwood, while Clifton, from a season littered with losses two years ago, has become a competitive outfit on the up. The progress of both schools has been good for the game.

The results went Westville’s way, although Clifton made a strong push for a win in the u15A game, coming up two points shy of the home team in the end.

CRICKET

It was very unfortunate that while other matches took place, both at Westville and elsewhere around the province, the 1st XI game had to be called off because of damage caused by rain on Friday.

Clifton and Westville have both delivered some fine cricket this term, and Clifton was coming off a tense win over DHS, which had brought the Horseflies‘ stellar 10-game winning streak to a stop.

Westville, although well beaten by DHS in their previous outing, had shown at the Westvaal North-South T20 that they can mix it up with the best teams in the country. There, they scored five wins in six matches.

Four matches were played, and Westville came away with wins in each of them.

WATER POLO

In the pool, Westville handed Clifton a 7-3 defeat in the meeting of the 1st teams. The early signs are that there might be a period of transition for Clifton as they form a new 1st side.

However, their u15A and u14A teams, which both won KZN Top 10 titles, were victorious. The Clifton u14A side, especially, is a formidable unit, which they showed again in a big win over Westville in which they didn’t concede a goal.

Overall, Clifton claimed three wins to the one of Westville.
