Ross Coetzee (feature photo, courtesy Hannah Shirley), recently named the captain of the Dolphins’ Khaya Majola Week team, delivered an inspired performance on Saturday on the AH Smith Oval to lead Kearsney College to a huge 127-run victory over Glenwood.

Apart from his leadership, Coetzee delivered with bat, ball, and in the field, setting an exemplary example as he continued a magnificent season.

Batting first, the home team put up 243/8 in their 50 overs, led by Coetzee’s 77 from 71 deliveries, which included 10 fours and a six. He shared a 105-run partnership with Aaron Blackburn for the fourth wicket, with Blackburn going on to make 59 from 99.

Up front, Jonty Wiggett struck 36 from 47, with fours and a six, while towards the end Sandiswa Yeni weighed in with a run-rate boosting 33 from 34, while also striking four fours and a six.

Glenwood’s opening pair, both of whom were selected for the Dolphins, Bandile Mbatha and Ntando Soni, claimed 2/48 and 2/40 in 10 respectively.

Facing a challenging run chase, Glenwood got off to a poor start, with Litha Gonya picking up a wicket with the first ball of the innings. By the 14th over, the Green Machine had slid to 41/4. Fours over later, they were staring down the barrel at 60/6.

A brief period of respite followed for the visitors as Ntando Soni and Sibonelo Phewa held up the home team’s charge towards victory. Their stand lasted just shy of 10 overs and added 39 runs before Soni was caught by Nic Comrie off Yeni’s bowling for 32 from 51 balls, which included four fours.

Phewa went on to top-score for Glenwood. He made 37 from 53, and found the boundary five times, before becoming the ninth player to lose his wicket.

Only one more run was added and the Durban school was all out for 116.

The wickets were neatly shared around. Keegan de Jager brought the Glenwood innings to a close by snapping up 2/2, while Ross Coetzee tied up the visitors’ batsmen, snaring 2/9 in eight. The opening pair also grabbed a pair each, with Gonya returning 2/20 from five and Yeni picking up 2/21 from nine.

Coetzee added two catches to his fine performances with the bat and ball.

BASKETBALL

Kearsney, who had been challenged in the early going when Glenwood last visited the SportZone, enjoyed a smooth cruise on Saturday. They sprinted out of the blocks, blasting into a big 28-8 lead after the first quarter and that was pretty much it. Job done!

Matters didn’t get any better for the visitors over the remaining quarters as Kearsney pulled further and further clear. In fact, the 28 points they put up in the first quarter was more than the Green Machine tallied in the game, with the home team scoring an easy 83-22 win.

Surprisingly, despite the large margin of victory, there was no standout performer. Kearsney’s was a team performance. Kwakuhle Sibiya topped all scorers with 11 points, while Mvelo Mkhize and Markus Wise posted 10 each, with Pabatso Sithole, Connor Grenfell, and Ndumiso Malunga dropping nine, and James Hastings-Brown finishing with eight.
