Maritzburg College was in the firing line when they faced Durban High School (DHS) on Theobald Oval on Saturday in a limited overs game. School had been stung by a T20 loss to Clifton two days earlier, which brought an outstanding 10-game winning streak to an end, and they took out their frustrations on College, roaring their way to a nine-wicket win.
College skipper Chad Mason won the toss and chose to bat, but that didn’t work out well as SA u19 Emerging speed merchant Bayanda Majola made him pay for that decision.
In a disastrous start, College’s Llewellyn Sutherland was run out without scoring and his fellow opener Daniel Nadasan fell to Majola, caught by Josh van Biljon, for another duck. Majola also accounted for Sphamandla Dzanibe and Michael Gibson to reduce the visitors to a miserable 7/4 in the fifth over. They were never able to recover.
Mason top-scored for the Red, Black, and White, with 22, and Ryan McKean made an unbeaten 18, but the visitors had no answers to the DHS bowlers.
Taine Havemann got rid of Mason, LBW, and he dismissed Karl Dedekind, the only other batsman to make it into double figures, LBW for 14, on his way to a return of 2/15 from six. School skipper Semal Pillay knocked over 3/12, also in six, to send the tail packing as College limped to 77 all out from 32 overs.
Majola was the star of the show, however, returning 4/17 from his eight overs.
In reply, DHS lost their consistent opener Ismaeel Omar early to a run out, but Jared Havemann and Semal Pillay, then, took the home side to a comfortable win. They reached 79/1 after 16.3 overs, with Havemann on 29 from 53 balls, with a four and two sixes, while Pillay finished with 28 from 42 deliveries, with three fours.
Apart from that big defeat, it was a good day for Maritzburg College’s cricket teams.
In the match of the day, College recorded the u14a result as a tie, while DHS had it as a two-wicket win for School. That’s a lesson in the necessity of teams providing scorers who sit with one another. When they do that, they can agree on names and scores.

BASKETBALL
Competition was keen on the basketball courts and it took a huge fourth quarter performance from College to capture the 1st team honours. They had entered the last quarter trailing 33-36, but they scored 17 points to only five for DHS in it to claim a nine-point victory, 50-41.
The open age group honours were shared 2-2, while DHS held a 3-2 edge at u16 level, including a handsome win in the meeting of the A teams.
College, however, ruled in the junior age groups – u14 and u15 – winning eight of the nine games, with the DHS u14E side preventing College from sweeping that age group.
