While rain put paid to the 1st XI cricket match between Michaelhouse and Kearsney College, there was no stopping the basketball teams duelling indoors in Balgowan.
Coming off a win over a good DHS team, and with a strong record against Kearsney at home, Michaelhouse was confident of victory, and they looked like they had the winning recipe when they started well, building up an 11-6 lead after the first quarter.
The defences ruled in the second quarter, with ‘House boosting their tally by only 10 points while Kearsney improved theirs by 12. At half-time it was 21-18 in the home side’s favour.
That break, though, did wonders for Kearsney, who shot the ball much better in the second half. They overhauled Michaelhouse and pulled 11 points clear by the end of the third quarter, enjoying a 39-28 advantage.
With strong defence, the visitors kept ‘House at bay and went on to claim a deserved 51-38 victory.
Pabatso Sithole led the way for Kearsney, scoring 14 points, while Lufuno Kanyongolo paced Michaelhouse, with 16.
It was a good day for the visitors, who recorded 12 wins, while Michaelhouse claimed nine victories. Neither school managed a clean sweep of an age group, which underlined how tight the competition was.
For the most part, defences ruled the day. Nowhere was that more evident than in the u16 age group where only one of the 10 teams in action scored 20 points. Michaelhouse won two games by three points and another by five. Kearsney picked up a three-point win and, in the only clear-cut win, they were victorious in the u16E contest by 20 points.
