WATER POLO

Northwood hosted Maritzburg College on Saturday for a day of water polo competition in home waters. It largely belonged to the home sides and the Knights dominated the first team clash.

For the first half, it was reasonably competitive, but Northwood made a big move in the third chukka, scoring almost at will, before total dominance of the fourth chukka took them to a one-sided 21-6 victory after they enjoyed a 7-2 advantage at half-time.

The home side moved smoothly up and down the pool and their strike rate when in front of goal was excellent. College’s attack lacked flow and speed in comparison and Northwood defended well, often turning over possession and catching the visitors on the counter.

In the end, their accumulation of pressure told as it became one-way traffic and Northwood ran away with the game.

Overall, they won six of the seven matches, with College’s u14B team scoring a win for the visitors.

BASKETBALL

On the basketball court, a hard-fought first team clash was, unfortunately, brought to a stop by rain, which fell at half-time and made the court slippery, thus preventing any further play. Only four points separated the sides at that point.

College claimed two open age group wins to one, but Northwood won the u16A match 23-15 and took three of five at that level.

The visitor’s u15A scored a handsome 49-21 victory, but Northwood picked up four victories to two in the u15 games. College, though, dominated the u14 games, winning six out of six, including a dominant 36-10 win for their u14A side.

Overall, Northwood won eight matches and College picked up 12 wins.
