Maritzburg College ended an almost two decades wait for a season’s double over Glenwood on Saturday on Goldstone’s, beating the Green Machine 39-20 after having won 18-7 on Dixon’s Field earlier in the season. They had last achieved the feat in 2005.
It hasn’t been a good season for Glenwood. They last won as few games, three, in 1996, with those wins being over Port Natal, Pinetown Boys’ High and DHS. That same year, College crushed them 51-6.
Still, while some supporters might despair, Glenwood was seldom out of games in 2024. In fact, on Saturday, they levelled at 15-15 early in the second half. Inexperience, though, likely played a big role in many of their defeats. Theirs was a young outfit, but next year they will be an experienced group, and that will certainly count for something. Don’t write them off!
For the College boys in grade 12, playing for a final time on Goldstone’s was an emotional experience. They controlled their emotions well, but, afterwards, as Phiwayinkosi Kubheka and his team were clapped off the field by their supporters, those emotions bubbled to the surface.
Jordan Thackeray, playing at flyhalf, enjoyed a strong showing. His kicking wasn’t always on target, but he scored two fine tries, outflanking the Glenwood defence to go over for the first one, and then he sold them a beautiful dummy to cut through a gap with surgical precision before dotting down under the uprights.
Up front, the pack set the tone, with College playing most of their rugby in the Glenwood half. This laid a good platform for scrumhalf Rayke Maartens, who shone. He set up the first of Luyanda Kunene‘s two tries by pilfering a Glenwood ball that shot out the side of the scrum, and later he made a sniping break from the 22 to dive over in the right-hand corner.
Overall, College ruled the rugby roost, drawing the 7th team game and losing the u14B match, but everything else went their way.
The u14 age group was tightly contested, although the Red, Black and White came away with wins in four of the five games.

HOCKEY
Maritzburg College claimed a 4-1 victory on Pape’s Astro in a meeting of the two 1st XIs. Glenwood, though, gave a good account of themselves. They pressed the home side heard in the early going and were rewarded with the first goal of the game.
Kyle Emerson‘s charges worked their way back into the contest, and, as he has done many times this season, Julian Konigkramer provided the goal scoring impetus to see the side to victory.
2024 proved to be a step forward for the Maritzburg College 1st XI and, with the cupboard still being loaded, the appetite for the 2025 season will, no doubt, be eager and optimistic.
Glenwood, although the results might not make that immediately clear, also showed improvement this season. Last year was a very tough one, with the Green Machine often being hammered. While they were comfortably beaten on a number of occasions in 2024, they were not haplessly overrun, as happened at times last year.
