In Johannesburg, Maritzburg College controlled the 1st XI game against King Edward VII (KES) from the start, winning three penalty corners in the early going, but they didn’t convert them.
KES, then, caught out College with a swift counter, which resulted in a penalty stroke for the home side. A successful flick put the visitors behind, but they were playing some good hockey.
Near halftime, Julian Konigkramer netted for the visitors to make it 1-1. KES struck back immediately, however, from a penalty corner. The hosts, though, saw their chances of success blighted soon after that when an off-the-ball incident earned one of their players a red card, reducing them to 10 players for the remainder of the contest.
The Red, Black and White made them pay, with Matt Smith scoring from the free hit, which made it 2-2 at the break.
In the second half, College made the ball do the work, shifting it left and right to manipulate the KES defence, which brought the visitors plenty of goal scoring opportunities. Banele Dlamini was the first to make one of those chances count, finishing off on the reverse from a long, accurate pass from Ethan Fabre.
Julian Konigkramer grabbed his second and College’s fourth with a powerful shot from the top of the circle, but KES, to their credit, were not done and they soon conjured up a third goal.
Coach Kyle Emerson‘s boys ensured they would win, however, with goal number five, scored by Konigkramer, which took him to his hattrick, off of a rebound.
Overall, Maritzburg College picked up nine wins, there were two draws, and KES won three games.
In the u14 age group, all but the C team won their matches. The C side, however, drew and finished their season with only one defeat, against Westville Boys’ High, and the best record of any team in the school.

RUGBY
A second trip up to Gauteng in successive weeks proved to be a journey too far for the Maritzburg College 1st XV, who were well beaten by King Edward VII, going down 21-47.
With some players missing through injury, College struggled to find their feet. They were off the pace and within 19 minutes were 19 points down.
Two of those tries went the way of the host’s flying left-wing Haniel Monkoti, who added two more later in the game to set a KES record of 22 for tries scored in a season.
College picked up three tries, through Ntsika Mkhize, Rayke Maartens and Nkululeko Sithole, with all three being converted, but KES’s early points’ scoring burst took them out of sight, and they won comfortably by 26 points.
There was good news for the Red, Black and White in the u16A, u15A and u14A matches, which they won, with the u15A side matching the KES 1st XV and winning by 26.
Overall, Maritzburg College won 14 matches and KES won seven. College was especially dominant in the u16 age group, going four for four in those games and, apart from the A team’s clash, winning comfortably.
