Glenwood vs St Charles, results, YouTube highlights, 1 June 2024

4 June 2023

For the first time since 1942, St Charles College‘s 1st XV won against Glenwood. And Saturday’s win came on Dixon’s.

Saints have impressed with their imaginative running rugby this season and they were deserved winners, finishing 13 points clear of the Green Machine, who scored a late try, just before the final whistle, to close the gap.

If it’s any consolation to Glenwood supporters, the St Charles’ success has been led by Glenwood old boy Craig Dwyer, who has made a seamless transition to the Pietermaritzburg school’s Director of Rugby.

It is the nature of life that fortunes ebb and flow and it’s been a tough season for Glenwood. However, the 1st XV squad contains only six matric boys, and the u16A team has enjoyed a strong season, so better days, no doubt, beckon next year.

The Glenwood u16A side was pushed hard by Saints, though, eventually winning by 12 points. On the day, the home team won all but one game, but that was the big one, which went the way of the visitors.

HOCKEY

While the Saints’ 1st XV recorded their first win over Glenwood in 82 years, there was also a big result in the hockey, but this time it went the way of Glenwood, who edged out St Charles 5-4 in the 1st XI clash.

It has been quite some time since the Durban school won a 1st team match against top KZN opposition, but the signs have been there all season long that a reversal of their hockey fortunes is underway.

While the results have not necessarily reflected that, the performances have. On Saturday, on the 3 Schools Astro, the performance and the result came together for Glenwood.

Overall, St Charles secured five wins, Glenwood took four, and one match was drawn, in a pleasingly evenly contested 10-game fixture list.
