Off the back of a thrilling 36-36 draw with King Edward VII on Bowden’s the previous weekend, Westville Boys’ High once again showed off their steely character to run out comfortable 40-26 winners over Hilton College at home on Saturday after trailing 8-23 in the first half.

Once again, the Griffin thrilled with their exciting running rugby, and Zekhethelo Siyaya bolstered his reputation with another wonderful display of counterattacking excellence.

Westville scored five tries, with two of them going to the fullback, while captain Chris Cloete, prop Jeshua Ferreira and centre Michael Satade also crossed the whitewash. Unathi Mlotshwa, who missed the KES game through injury, made his mark by contributing 15 points with the boot.

Josh Grant and Xander Vorster crossed for first half tries for the visitors, while Xola Bakana put up 16 points with his trusty right boot, including a drop goal.

The open age group competition was very tight, with two of the six matches being settled by one point, and another by two. Both schools won three games.

Westville took the u16A honours and won three of four at that age level, while Hilton edged out Westville in the u15A game. The Griffin, however, won the other three u15 matches.

It was tight between the u14A sides, with Westville winning, and going on to sweep the age group.

On the Astro, Hilton has enjoyed a strong season, although a recent 2-3 loss against Michaelhouse was an unexpected setback. Still, with eight players in the KZN Inland u18A squad, the visitors would have fancied their chances against Westville.

Westville, though, are well drilled and exceptionally tough on their own turf. Last season, an outstanding DHS team found that out when the Griffin scored a 3-1 victory. They had lost by the same margin in Durban. On Saturday, Hilton was on the receiving end, going down 1-2.

Westville had slightly the better of the results in the open age group, winning three games, drawing one and losing one.

Hilton aced the u16A match, but Westville won the other four games in that age group, and their highly rated u14A team withstood a strong challenge from Hilton to continue an outstanding season. As they have done so many times this year, the Westville u14 teams produced a clean sweep of their matches.
