St Charles welcome St Stithians to Pietermaritzburg for a derby weekend showdown, and the hosts’ 1st XV put on a fine show to race into a 21-3 lead on Old Orchards, before the visitors clawed their way back into the contest.

Raphael Ajibade barrelled over for the opening try for St Charles and Okuhle Peti joined him on the score sheet after an interception, which saw him racing through to score beneath the uprights.

A wonderfully judged cross kick from Salmaan Mohammed then put Matthew Ludick in for a third.

The visiting Saints responded by driving over from a lineout towards the end of the first half. Their swift right-wing Cullen Bradford then popped out wide on the left twice early in the second half to turn on the jets and go over for a pair of tries.

When Bradford’s second was converted, St Stithians were within one at 20-21, but Athi Qumo scored St Charles’ fourth after a neat scissor with Rashied Isaacs, and Mohammed maintained his 100 percent conversion record, with his fourth of the contest, to make the final score 28-20 to the Pietermaritzburg school.

St Charles enjoyed a very successful weekend on the rugby fields. All of their A teams won, and they claimed seven wins to the two of St Stithians, while one match was drawn.
