In an entertaining contest, Michaelhouse built up a comfortable 21-point lead early in the second half of their meeting on Meadows with Pretoria Boys High, but they had to then withstand a furious fightback to claim victory on Saturday.
Boys High, demonstrating great grit and determination, ran in three tries without reply to pull within four of ‘House at 27-31, but a late penalty by Luke Davidson secured a hard-fought 34-27 victory.
The home side crossed for five tries, scored by Riley Gehren, Tom Baguley, William Ridl, Robert Combrinck and Aya Mkokheli, while Davidson added three conversions and a penalty for a personal haul of nine points.
The Candies bagged four tries, with hooker Thapelo Mphela dotting down twice, and captain Tshepiso Shikhibana and Jeffrey Singo scoring once each. Tumisho Motswi landed two conversions and a penalty.
Michaelhouse’s depth was evident in the open age group matches as the Balgowan boys’ record was unblemished in eight outings.
They won four of the five u16 matches, including the A team showdown, but won one and drew one in five u15 matches. Again, though, ‘House was victorious in the A sides’ clash.
PBHS, however, owned the u14 age group, taking victory in all five games.

HOCKEY
On the Punchbowl Astro, on Saturday morning, Michaelhouse started strongly and owned the better of the first chukka. They gained the upper hand in the second chukka, forcing PBHS onto the defensive, and were rewarded when Murray Hall-Jones put the finishing touches on a penalty corner variation.
Pretoria Boys High gained control of the midfield after half-time. Whereas Michaelhouse had kept them outside their circle in the first half, the second half saw the visitors making regular trips into the ‘House D.
When they were awarded a penalty stroke, they turned to Michael Upton, who neatly netted to secure PBHS a share of the spoils.
Overall, Boys High enjoyed the edge on the Astro. They picked up six wins to Michaelhouse’s two, while four matches ended in draws.
