If the Kearsney College 1st XV could bottle up the recipe they’ve found to finish their last two games, against Northwood and Westville Boys’ High respectively, they might never lose again. Against both, they ran in three unanswered tries in short order as time ran down. Unfortunately, it was too little too late for the One-Stripe.
Against Westville, on Stott Field, on Saturday, the Griffin claimed a 34-22 victory, which was almost exactly the same as the Knights‘ result a week earlier, with Northwood taking that one 34-24.
The similarity extended to the pattern of the first half, with Westville going over for three tries and Kearsney replying with a late penalty to make it 19-3 at the break, which was exactly the same score as against Northwood.
Westville extended their advantage to 34-3 in the second half and it looked like a one-sided thrashing with just over six minutes remaining. But the One-Stripe showed admirable fight to add 19 points in double-quick time to make the final result a respectable one.
The 1st XV might have gone down, but Kearsney didn’t lose any of the other five open age group games. The 2nd teams drew, and Kearsney sneaked an 8-7 victory in the 3rd XV contest.
Westville took three wins in the u16 age group, while the u16C teams replicated the 17-17 draw put up by the 2nd XVs.
Kearsney took the u15A win, the B teams drew, and Westville won the other two games in that age group.
There were only two points in it in the u14A match, with Westville edging it and adding another two wins in the B and C games.

HOCKEY
With Kearsney’s boarders out in their numbers and a sizeable contingent of supporters having made the short trip from Westville to Botha’s Hill, the Mason Astro crackled with electricity on Friday evening. Such support is fantastic for the game and wonderfully uplifting.
Neither of the 1st sides managed to score, but some 0-0 draws are entertaining, and this was one of them. The Griffin came closest to breaking the deadlock when they awarded a penalty stroke, but the crossbar saved Kearsney.
Kearsney’s 2nd XI claimed a 1-0 victory, but there were no more for them. Apart from one draw, Westville strung together a very good list of results. Their excellent u14A team, though, was challenged by Kearsney, and managed only a 1-0 win. Not many have got that close to Westville’s exciting youngsters this season.
