RUGBY

Yes, Jeppe High School for Boys ran out comfortable winners in the 1st XV rugby game on Reece-Edwards Field on Saturday but, make no mistake, Northwood enjoyed a very good weekend against the visitors from Johannesburg.

In fact, Jeppe managed only one more win in the seven open age group rugby games. Northwood held the edge in a tightly contested u16 age group, while the u15 boys went a perfect six for six against Jeppe.  Props to the Northwood u14C team, too. They broke up a Jeppe sweep at u14 level.

The 1st XV match was disappointing because the Knights were right in it, trailing by only seven early in the second half, but launching wave after wave of assault on the Jeppe try line. A valiant defensive stand kept Northwood at bay and from there Jeppe struck as the home side, uncharacteristically, lost their way.

Still, the ledger titled in Northwood’s favour at the end of the day, with 14 wins to Jeppe’s seven, and one match drawn.

Jeppe's first try was rather against the run of play, but it was the first of a number of long-range efforts from the visitors. (Photo: Brad Morgan)

HOCKEY

On the Astro, the Northwood 1st XI got one over an opponent which has more often than not come out on top against them. Jeppe has a well-earned reputation as one of South Africa’s premier hockey-playing schools and, while their 2024 1st team had been somewhat inconsistent, no game against the Zebras is a given.

Northwood won three of the four open age group contests, while Jeppe claimed three 1-0 wins at u16 level to Northwood’s two victories, which included a thrilling 4-3 win for the u16F team, and a draw. At u14 level, Northwood went three of four, too.

Overall, Northwood won eight, Jeppe five, and there was only one draw
