RUGBY
The St Charles College and DHS 1st XVs met at the Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium on Saturday as part of the Sharks High Schools Rugby Day.
Ahead of the clash, DHS has clearly established themselves among the leading teams in the province, and maybe even number one, while Saints had put together some strong results, which included a win over Milnerton, who subsequently took down Rondebosch, the only team to have inflicted a defeat on DHS this season.
On Saturday, though, those previous results didn’t help St Charles at all as DHS put it all together in the second half to break open a tight contest and run away to a 54-12 win. It had been only 14-0 at the break.
The Horseflies, as is their way, ran in some special tries, but Saints’ scrumhalf Matthew Fick caught the eye with a special solo try-scoring effort from his own 10-metre line, and one of the best try-preventing tackles you’re likely to see to deny DHS another second half five-pointer.
The day belonged to DHS on the rugby fields. Especially at the upper end of competition – the A and B teams – the Horseflies rank among the best in KZN, and thus, against a smaller school, like St Charles, it was a tough match-up for Saints.

HOCKEY
On the Astro, the DHS 1st hockey team hit their straps against St Charles. Once School builds up a head of steam and starts moving the ball quickly, they’re a tough opponent. When matters get tight, they have the skills to exit crowded areas, too.
Their challenge in the past couple of seasons has been their finishing. They’re as good as any team out there up until the final third. However, it was a case of when they started converting at a higher rate someone was going to have a rough day, and that proved to be the case for Saints.
Credit to St Charles, though. While their 1st XI went down, their 2nd and 3rd teams both won handsomely.
DHS ran away with the u16A game and ruled the roost in that age group. It was far closer at u14 level, with DHS winning the clash of the A teams, while three matches finished in draws.
