HOCKEY

The Clifton College 1st XI came out of the blocks fast against Glenwood High on the Riverside Sports Club Astro on Saturday, putting the visitors’ defence under pressure and turning over possession, which they swiftly turned into counterattacks.

That brought the home side an early goal, scored by Daniel Hompes, and it looked like it was going to be a comfortable day for Clifton. Glenwood, though, is a team that’s on the up. They are clearly improving – week by week, it seems – and they kept the hosts at bay the rest of the way.

Clifton created more chances, but finishing has been their biggest challenge this season thus far, and they were unable to find another goal to give themselves some breathing room.

That could have cost them, when Glenwood won a couple of late penalty corners, but Clifton survived the scare to claim a 1-0 win.

They won three of the four open age group games, but the u16 matches were split, while Clifton cruised to clear-cut wins in the two u14 games.

RUGBY

The meeting of the two 1st XVs was decided by ball possession, with Glenwood dominating that aspect of play and using it to keep Clifton pinned in their territory for most of the contest.

It also enabled them to cross for three tries in the first half, on their way to a 17-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the home side went blow-for-blow with the Green Machine and were rewarded when Bradley Beeslaar went over for a try. A couple of late tries, however, moved the visitors well clear and they won by 27 points. It was a sizeable margin of victory, but it had been a hard, physical battle.

Glenwood convincingly won the u16A match, but the u15A and u14 A matches were well contested. The size of the u14A teams was a sight to behold!
