Upsets catch the eye on last day of Glenwood Rugby Festival

27 March 2024

The final day of the 2024 Glenwood Rugby Festival brought with it a number of surprising results, as u16 and 1st teams went at it. Probably the biggest upset of the day was DHS going 8-10 down to Volkskool Heidelberg in an u16 game.

Westville Boys’ High, too, came out on the wrong end of their clash with Sarel Cilliers, with the school from Glencoe winning 35-26.

Glenwood scored a good win over a strong Pietersburg team, winning 33-18, while Clifton College comprehensively outplayed Eye of the Tiger, cruising to a 53-0 victory.

In a hard-fought contest, Wesvalia kept Jim Fouché off the scoreboard, winning 19-0, and Melkbosstrand battled their way to a 12-3 victory over Alberton’s Dinamika.

Meanwhile, the Jim Fouché and Wesvalia 1st XVs delivered a fantastic tussle, with the Bloemfontein side sneaking a 26-25 win. In another back-and-forth encounter, Volkskool Heidelberg escaped with a 38-35 victory over the Hilton College Invitational side.

There was a 17-17 draw between the DHS Invitational team and Frikkie Meyer, while the Glenwood Invitational side ran out 33-8 winners over Potchefstroom Volkskool.

Dinamika and Melkbosstrand went at it hard, with Dinamika recording a 29-10 victory, while there were big wins for Landboudal and HTS Middelburg, who beat Centurion (40-0) and Eye of the Tiger (55-0) respectively.

Immediate feedback on the six-day-long festival has been very positive, with participants praising the organisation of the event, and sharing their appreciation of the opportunities to test their teams against opposition they wouldn’t see under other circumstances.
