The Eastern Cape’s Grey High School and Selborne College stole the spotlight at the 2024 Nomads Hockey Festival, with both winning on Saturday to complete the event with five wins from five matches each.
Grey, who came from 0-2 down at halftime against the hosts, Maritzburg College, in their opening game to win 3-2, recorded a 2-1 win over Pretoria Boys High, while Selborne won by the same margin against St John’s College.
Hilton College and Grey College produced an exciting and entertaining match, with Hilton grabbing a 3-2 victory to complete Nomads with a record of four wins and one loss, which had come when Grey High sneaked a 1-0 win on Friday morning.
Maritzburg College and Jeppe did battle in the last match of the festival, with Jeppe, the losers of their first three games, winning 1-0 to end with two wins on the trot.
In the day’s other contest, Wynberg Boys’ High ran out 4-2 winners over KES, who endured a difficult event.
Last season, Maritzburg College won two and lost three at Nomads, and in 2024 their record was exactly the same. They went down to the two unbeaten sides, with Selborne beating College 2-0, but recorded a good 1-0 victory over Wynberg and beat St John’s 2-1.
They look like a better team this year than last. But they need more winning results to prove that.
