RUGBY

The Michaelhouse 1st XV claimed a hard-fought win over Westville on Bowden’s on Saturday, with the Griffin struggling with the kinds of errors that can frustrate players and coaches in their first outings of the season.

Michaelhouse, meanwhile, were well directed by Luke Davidson from flyhalf. His goal-kicking kept their score ticking over and, as importantly, his tactical kicking controlled the territorial battle in challenging, windy conditions.

Both teams went over for three tries, with Stefan Moolman, Carlyle Hawkins and Rourke Murray dotting down for Michaelhouse, and Zekhethelo Siyaya, Blake Allbon and Jeshua Ferreira replying for Westville. In the end, though, Davidson’s boot made a crucial difference.

Westville pulled off a good win over ‘House’s strong 2nd XV, but the visitors won the other four open age group games.

Westville claimed the u16A honours, but Michaelhouse won the other three u16 matches. It was three to two to the red and white at u15 level, including a narrow two-point win in the u15A clash, and the u14 age group went ‘House’s way, also three wins to two, which included the A team game.

HOCKEY

The 1st team hockey honours went to the hosts, Westville Boys’ High, who were well led by Owen Slack, who did an outstanding job at the back alongside Nicholas Ackerman.
Thabo Dlamini gave Westville a 1-0 lead at halftime and early in the second half Caleb van Loenen made it 2-0. Michaelhouse, though, were much better in the second stanza and by the fourth chukka they played most of the hockey deep inside the Westville half. The home team’s defence held up, however, and they secured the win.
The ‘House 2nds sparkled in a 4-0 win over Westville, but the day, mostly, belonged to the hosts.
They enjoyed slightly the better of the open age group matches. They also won three of the u16 games. The other two ended in draws, including the u16A clash, and Westville swept the three u14 contests.
