The second edition of the Glenwood High School Andile Phehlukwayo u13 Cricket Festival powered by Pedros Glenwood fires into action on Thursday, with each of the 18 teams playing two T20 matches and one T16 game on a very busy day.
It’s a big event, but fun at the same time, as the players engage in battle in the thrill-a-minute shorter forms of the game.
Zayne Bux, Glenwood’s Director of Cricket, shared his hopes for the event: “I hope they get to share in an awesome cricket experience, played at good facilities with their mates. Those that they are not [yet] friends with, I hope that they make friends during the festival.
“I hope they also get to interact with the Glenwood boys, who will be on duty at the festival, and learn about our school, and also make a new connection.
“Many of those Glenwood boys, who will be working as managers and liaisons on the fields, would have attended these primary schools and also participated in the festival. I would like to see them link up with boys from their old school and coaches from those schools, to connect with them again.
Bux said he hoped to see some outstanding cricket played, too: “I’m hoping to see players achieve milestones. It is always nice when players are representing their schools, and they score their first fifty or hundred.
“They get to play in front of a decent-sized crowd, if they make it to the final.”
Bux said a Festival XI will also be chosen, made up of the leading performers over the course of the two days.
He said a side that best functions as a team will go far. That’s what it’s going to take to make the final and then win it.
There are three groups of four schools, and one with six teams. Every team will play three matches on Friday. The semi-finals will follow on Saturday, featuring the group winners. Then, after prize-giving is held, the final will be played.
Group A features Penzance, Pelham, Atholl Heights and Hillcrest Senior Primary, while Group B includes Glenwood Prep, Westville Senior Primary, Amanzimtoti, and Huttenpark, who will make the trip from Newcastle.
The Group C lineup includes St Henry’s, Northdene, Glenstantia and Winston Park, while the largest of the groups, Group D, will be contested by Manor Gardens, Grantham Park, RC Rangers, RC Challengers, Mtunzini and Durban North College.
