DHS vs Northwood cricket report, results, 3 Feb 2024

5 February 2024

If you haven’t been paying attention, you might have missed the upswing in the fortunes of the DHS 1st XI this season. They’re playing good, disciplined cricket and on Saturday, on the Theobald Oval, it brought them a convincing 74-run win over Northwood in a 50-overs-a-side game.

It took a scrappy batting effort to get School to 192/6 after their 50 overs. Most batsmen contributed a little, with a number making it into the teens without exiting them.

Runs can be hard to come by on the Theobald Oval, and when DHS had slipped to 95/6 in the 33rd over they were, potentially, in trouble. However, Jared Havermann, together with Bayanda Majola, provided the home team’s innings with a nice boost, as they shared an unbroken stand of 97 runs.

Havermann was the catalyst, striking nine fours in his unbeaten 59, which came from 68 balls. Majola played a supporting role and finished with 18 not out from 45 balls.

The other primary contributor to the DHS total was the opening batsman, Omar Ismaeel, who played maturely for 29 from 70 deliveries.

Jordan Matthews removed three top order batsmen in his 10 overs and conceded only 21 runs to lead the visitors’ bowling effort. Harlee Jagga was tight, too, snaring 2/26 from 10, while Ben Cilliers kept up the pressure, taking 1/28 from his 10.

In reply, Northwood was rocked early on as Bayanda Majola removed Alistair Duncan and Semal Pillay got rid of Tuswa Phetha cheaply. Only one run later, Majola followed up with the wicket of Harlee Jagga to leave the Knights wobbling on 10/3.

Thayin Kuppin, who had entered at the fall of the first wicket, resisted stubbornly. He stuck around for 74 balls, hit four fours, and made 39, the highest score of the innings.

However, when he was the sixth man out, with the total on 94, it was the beginning of the end for Northwood. On a very similar total – DHS was 95/6 – the home side had rescued their innings. Unfortunately for the Knights, they were unable to replicate the Horseflies’ efforts.

Jordan Matthews demonstrated grit to make 17 from 50 deliveries, while Mfana Shange contributed 22 from 33 for the visitors before he was the last man out with the total on 118.

All six of the bowlers used by DHS picked up at least one wicket each. Majola, who set School on course for victory with his opening salvo, finished with 2/17 from seven, while Semal Pillay claimed 2/29 from nine.

Disciplined bowling also enabled the home side to heap pressure on the Knights’ batsmen, with Zaid Motala, taking 1/13 from seven, while Dalan Naraidu knocked over 1/4 from 3.2 overs.
