CRICKET

The unpredictable nature of the Glenwood 1st XI, the unpredictable nature of the Hilton 1st XI, and the unpredictable cricket of cricket was on full display when the teams met on the Hart-Davis Oval in Hilton on Saturday.

Glenwood entered the contest off the back of an impressive W100 eight-wicket win over Northwood on Wednesday. Hilton, meanwhile, were struggling for form. The fortunes of both teams were reversed in dramatic fashion, however.

Batting first, the visitors were put under pressure by the home team’s bowlers, who ran in hard and received some assistance from the pitch. Netanzi Denenga impressed with the new ball and struck early, having Sibonela Phewa caught behind off a rising delivery.

The Hilton seamers – Denenga, captain Ethan van Heerden and Kyle Christie – reduced the Green Machine to 36/4 after 14 overs, when drinks were taken.

Glenwood, then, advanced their total to 49 before losing their fifth wicket, and from there it became a bit of a procession as the visitors crashed to 56/9.

Nathan Moodley top scored with a stubborn 19 as he adjusted his game to suit the conditions, but he received little support.

A stubborn last wicket partnership took Glenwood to 72 all out as Denenga returned figures of 3/10 and Van Heerden picked up 3/25.

When Hilton visited the crease, the openers, Robert Burman and Ben Hockly made it appear as if they were playing on a different, kinder pitch. They took the game to Glenwood and raced to a 10-wicket victory in 11.5 overs. Burman finished unbeaten on 40, while Hockly made 31.

And just to underline how strange the game of cricket can be, it’s worth pointing out that the Northwood team that Glenwood so handily beat, had comfortably won against Hilton the previous weekend.
