BASKETBALL

Glenwood’s 1st basketball team came out swinging and caught Kearsney somewhat cold as they took the contest to the home side on Saturday at the SportZone. Stung, Kearsney clawed their way back into the contest and sneaked in front at the break by a single point.

Then, having wiped out the deficit, they came on strong in the second half to record a 17-point victory. It may have been comfortable in the end, but Glenwood made Kearsney fight hard for the win.

The popularity of the sport at the Botha’s Hill school was underlined by the fact that their teams faced four different sets of opposition in order to get every side a game.

Ryan Browning, with 2/14 in four, and his fast bowling side kick, Sandiswa Yeni, with 1/13 in four, led the way for the visitors, while Kyle Bryan top scored for the home side with 28 from 37 deliveries.

Opener Cameron Veenstra struck two fours and a six in an innings of 29 from 31 at the top of the order for Kearsney, and captain Ross Coetzee made an unbeaten 32 from 37 to see their team to the win.

WATER POLO

There are high expectations for the Kearsney 1st water polo team this year and they did nothing to dispel those expectations as they ran roughshod over Glenwood on Saturday. Kearsney were on the board before 20 seconds had been played and quickly had five goals scored.

Glenwood slowly started to get into the game and pulled themselves to within six goals of the home team at 4-10 down at the break. Kearsney, though, were just getting started. In the second half, they went on a wild goal-scoring spree, netting 10 times in the third chukka and another nine times in the fourth, to run out 29-7 winners.

Thomas Aylward scored six goals, Luca Sandri five, and James Pohl and Thomas Francke three each. Matthew Botha netted three times for Glenwood, while Blake Gardener and Kyron de Kock managed two each.

While Kearsney dominated, including a 23-goal win in the u15A clash, Glenwood spoiled the hosts’ perfect record when their u15B team forced a courageous 6-6 draw.
