BASKETBALL

The Clifton and Michaelhouse 1st basketball teams put on a show at the Riverside Sports Club on Saturday, with momentum constantly shifting throughout the contest.

The hosts made a strong start, but Michaelhouse pulled it back and it was 16-16 at halftime. Then, Michaelhouse seemed to be on their way to a comfortable win when they went up 30-22. Clifton, undaunted, forced a number of turnovers, which they turned into easy layups, to level the scores at 31-31.

The teams were, then, all square at 33-33 before Michaelhouse went on a 9-0 run. Full of heart, Clifton continued to battle until the final whistle. They closed the gap, but in the end, came up five points shy.

Michaelhouse ruled the roost through almost all of the rest of the matches, but big ups to the Clifton u14C team, which prevented the visitors recording a clean sweep.

CRICKET

At the Riverside Sports Club, Michaelhouse romped to a big win over Clifton in a 40-overs-a-side match. Despite playing on a slow outfield, ‘House batted at over six runs per over and then clamped down on the Clifton batsmen, who struggled to score at a competitive run rate.

Dylan Hewlett sparkled in the visitors’ innings of 246/7 with an unbeaten 104 from 106 deliveries, which included four fours and two sixes, while Michael Spencer weighed in with 68 from 94.

Shahzaad Perumal, with 3 for 30 in nine, was the pick of the Clifton bowlers. Preston Govender was a little on the expensive side, but he claimed two wickets, returning figures of 2 for 47 in six.

Lawson Dinsdale, batting at eight, top scored for Clifton with 42 from 45 balls, hitting four fours and one six, while Cohen Naidoo made 21 before being run out.

The wickets were spread around the Michaelhouse bowlers. KZN Inland left-arm spinner, Cameron Strudwick, tied up the home team, picking up 2 for 14 in nine, which included three maidens, while opening bowler, Ross Moller, captured an impressive 2 for 13 in five.

They received good support from Luke Mitchell, with 2 for 36 in nine, and Ethan Muir, who picked up 2 for 21 in five.

WATER POLO

Despite big turnover from their outstanding and very experienced 1st team of 2023, Clifton College remains, as always, a powerhouse in the pool.

With KZN u19A players Ollie Ditz and Ross Strauss and KZN u19B player Ethan Lyne returning, they still maintain a solid core, with three other players having seen 1st team action last year, and it showed in their win over Michaelhouse at the Clifton Aquatic Centre, which was pumping with a lively crowd.

‘House shocked the home side when they took an early lead, but Clifton, playing with assurance and confidence, hit back with five of their own before the visitors were able to score again. Credit to Michaelhouse, though, they kept going at it and finished the contest with credit despite Clifton winning by six goals.

The boys from Balgowan did exceptionally well to win the other three open matches, but Clifton took victory in the u16 and u15 games.
