The DHS pool was ground zero for the Nick Rey under-16 Water Polo Tournament, from Friday to Sunday, with KZN’s best facing tough challenges from teams from Gauteng and the Eastern Cape. After a thrilling 5-5 draw, the final went to a shootout, with Selborne College edging out Kearsney College 3-2 to capture the title.
Competition was tight and unpredictable, and the champions didn’t walk away unscathed. On day two, they were beaten by Hilton College, who ultimately finished third. If anything, Kearsney delivered the more emphatic performances and results before the final, but it is the nature of sport that anything could happen in a title-decider.
The boys from Botha’s Hill opened their challenge with a six-goal win over their rivals, Westville Boys’ High, before cruising to big wins over the DHS Invitational team and Grey College. They also won by a four-goal margin over St Stithians, who went on to finish fourth, on the last day.
As the case should be, clashes on the final day were closely contested:
Selborne defeated Clifton by two goals, the DHS Invitational side drew 5-5 with Saint Benedict’s, Grey College won by a single goal over Maritzburg College, Westville won by the odd goal in nine against Northwood, DHS and Clifton drew, Michaelhouse overcame Affies by two goals, Hilton took down St Stithians by two, and the final went to a shootout.
The biggest win was Kearsney’s 12-8 victory over St Stithians early in the day.
