Academic excellence highlighted at Kearsney Prize-giving

Academics were in the spotlight as Kearsney College recently celebrated another year of exceptional achievements at the school’s annual prize-giving held in Henderson Hall where the school orchestra welcomed the procession with Gaudeamus Igitur.

The guest speaker was Kearsney Old Boy, Doctor Michael Cardo, who matriculated from the school in 1994 where he excelled in academics and as a public speaker. He later received a BA Summa Cum Laude in English, French and History from the Universities of Natal, and an MPhil and PhD in History from the University of Cambridge.

Doctor Cardo is an author, speech writer, and researcher of public policy and political communication, and formerly served as the Democratic Alliance’s Shadow Minister of Economic Development.

His message to the boys finishing school in 2023 was to do something that “makes a difference” and to always strive to “put in more than you take out” in all aspects of life.

Dux

Anesu Chimusoro was named the Dux for 2023, receiving subject trophies for English literature, accounting, biology and physical science. He also received Academic Honours Cum Laude, which are awarded to boys achieving an aggregate of over 86 percent.

The runner-up, Nthato Sifumba was presented with Academic Honours Cum Laude, too, and received subject prizes for business studies, information technology and further studies mathematics.

Two other students, Liam Jansen and Fritz Rheeder, also received their Academic Honours Cum Laude.

An exceptional 28 percent of boys achieved an aggregate of over 75 percent.

Best all-rounder

Dylan Wiggett received the trophy for the best all-rounder in the 6th Form. He was awarded Academic Honours (80 to 85 percent average), while he also captained the 1st hockey team, was vice-captain of the indoor hockey team, and also played 1st team cricket and football. He was, furthermore, a prefect and the Head of Gillingham House.

Others to receive Academic Honours included Caleb Saks, Lwandile Khoza, Jarred Christie, Sachin Bhagwan, Nala Madlala, LiPuma Mthethwa, Nicholas Butler, Ethan Groom, Oliver Brazier, Sean Diseko, Thomas Hurley, Hayden Bishop, Dominic Hislop, Jacques Nel, Seth Abrahams, Sange Mdunyelwa and Hayden Davel.

Academic Colours (75 to 79 percent) were awarded to James Engelbrecht, Ryan Denekamp, Gabriel Delport, Otsile Ntsele, Reuel Jagarnath, Kieran Pearton, Kyle Pottinger, Devahn van der Walt, Jordan Boyd, Ruschay Govender, Kamva Khamaba, Ethan Marnitz and Aidan Albrecht.

Speech Night concluded with a Benediction by Kearsney College chaplain Rev Kym Bishop.
