Cricket
The Northwood 1st XI had Maritzburg College in early trouble on Goldstones in their 50-overs-a-side clash in overcast conditions, removing both openers before the total had reached double figures.
Soon, College were 28 for 3, but that brought captain Bryn Brokensha and Michael Gibson together and they shared in a match-defining partnership of 132 runs in 33 overs before Gibson was run out for a well-played 52 from 108 balls, with four fours.
Brokensha, though, was out in the middle almost to the end, reaching his second century on Goldstones this year just before the end of the College innings. He was dismissed for a real captain’s knock of 104 from 131 deliveries, with seven fours and two sixes.
Northwood innings
In the challenging conditions, College managed 209 for 8 in their 50 overs, with Northwood opening bowler Andrew Deeb capturing a fine 3 for 20 in his 10 overs. That tally didn’t look enough early on in the Knights’ reply, though, as the visitors put on 59 for the first wicket in less than 10 overs. Within the space of two runs, however, they lost another two batsmen to slip to 61 for 3.
There were some starts further down the order, but no other batsmen pressed on. The openers, Mfana Shange and Mohamed Karodia led the way, scoring 38 and 31 respectively, with Karodia’s coming at just better than a run a ball. Both hit five fours.
The issue, though, was partnerships and, apart from the openers, there was little to write home about. Chad Mason, though, had a memorable outing with the ball for College, snaring 4 for 24 in his 10 overs.
His spin twin, Oliver Da Costa, snapped up 2 for 21 in 7.2. James Wiggle went wicketless, but his 10-over spell heaped huge pressure on the visitors as he conceded only 14 runs. Caleb Thomas, too, with 0 for 14 in five, caused the Northwood reply to stall.
In the end, after 47.3 overs, the Knights were all out for 151, leaving College the convincing winners by 58 runs.

Basketball
Maritzburg College enjoyed a clean sweep of the open age group basketball games and shaded the under-15 results, but Northwood enjoyed a good day in the under-14 age group. The under-16 results were all square at two-all, but Northwood claimed a narrow two-point victory in the duel between the A teams.
