Playoff head-to-heads set at Clifton Water Polo Tournament

24 September 2023

The Western Cape’s SACS and Paul Roos booked themselves a place in the title-decider after wins over Hilton College and Clifton College respectively in the semi-finals of the Clifton Water Polo Tournament on Sunday.

In a contest filled with spectacular goals, Hilton were in pole position to secure a place in the final, but SACS, who edged out Westville Boys’ High by a single goal in the quarterfinals, fought their way back to score the last three goals of the contest to record an 11-10 win.

Finalists again

Clifton College started strongly against Paul Roos, but the Stellenbosch school, who finished as runners-up to Saint John’s College in last year’s tournament, did an excellent defensive job to stymie Clifton’s dangerous shooters. They trailed 2-4 in the third chukka but managed to turn matters around and win 9-7.

The first three quarterfinals were extremely tightly contested, with SACS sneaking by Westville in the first one, Paul Roos defeating Kearsney College 10-9 in the second, and Hilton getting by Saint John’s College 3-2 in a penalty shootout after the teams had finished regulation time at 8-8. Clifton, meanwhile, swamped Saint Andrew’s College 11-2.

Spare a thought, though, for Westville Boys’ High, who gave two outstanding teams everything they could handle, but ultimately suffered one-goal losses to both SACS and Saint John’s College. A break here and a break there and the Griffin could have been playing for much higher honours than their spot in the playoff for 7th and 8th on Monday.
