Captivating clashes light up Clifton Water Polo Tournament

23 September 2023

Day two of the 2023 Clifton Water Polo Tournament dished up some delicious fare, with the hosts’ 9-7 win over the defending champions, Saint John’s College, a top contender for the game of the day. That result left the Durban boys on top of Pool D.

Clifton captain Mitchell Slade delivered a monumental performance on both ends of the pool to guide his team to victory, but it was far from a one-man show. Paul Martins’ charges appear to be in good form but, up against a field laden with top quality, anything is possible over the next two days.

Number one ranked SACS continued their imperious form, comfortably dealing with a very good Kearsney College line-up to secure first place in Pool B.

Hilton College on song

Like the Capetonians, Hilton College impressed once again, recording a solid win over Saint Andrew’s College to keep a clean record in Pool C. They played with assurance, maintained a good structure throughout, and produced a well-oiled performance.

It was super-tight for top spot in Pool A between Paul Roos and Westville Boys’ High, with the Capetonians edging out the KZN side by a single goal.

Meanwhile, Glenwood enthralled with their big-hearted showing against KES. They trailed 1-5 during the contest but fought their way back to finish level at 7-7 after regulation time. That sent the two teams into a shootout and the Green Machine emerged the winners from a nail-biter, after appearing on their way to defeat during the duel from the five-metre line.

Taxing day

Maritzburg College had a busier day than any other team after one of their matches was moved from Sunday to Saturday. They played three times and won twice, including sneaking victory by a single goal over Reddam Constantia in a 15-goal thriller.

They might not win the Clifton Water Polo Tournament but, if anyone knows their rugby, they’ll recognise the names of many of the College 1st XV players who were part of an exceedingly exciting rugby season.
