20 September 2023

The Clifton Aquatic Centre is set to rock to the 18th edition of the Clifton Water Polo Tournament from Friday, 22 September to Monday, 25 September, with 16 schools, divided into four pools, battling it out for the honours.

Line-up

The line-up, which features many of the country’s top teams, includes Clifton, Kearsney, Glenwood, Westville, DHS, Hilton, Maritzburg College, and Michaelhouse from KZN; SACS, Reddam Constantia and Paul Roos, from the Western Cape; Saint Andrew’s College from the Eastern Cape, KES, Affies and Saint John’s College from Gauteng; and Grey College from the Free State.

Pool A consists of KES, Kearsney, SACS and Glenwood, with Paul Roos, Westville, DHS and Affies in Pool B. Hilton, Saint Andrew’s, Maritzburg College and Reddam Constantia make up Pool C, while the hosts, Clifton, are in Pool D with Michaelhouse, Saint John’s and Grey College.

Top teams

SACS enjoyed an outstanding season at the beginning of 2023 and were ranked number one in the country. They will be challenged hard in their pool by Paul Roos, though, who were ranked within the top five. Two other teams that were ranked inside the top five in South Africa, Saint Andrew’s College and Hilton College, are in Pool C.

Kearsney appears to be in good form, having recently beaten Hilton, while the hosts, Clifton, edged out Westville by a single goal last weekend. Both teams were ranked in the top 10 at the end of the first term, with Kearsney was just outside of it.

Clifton will fancy their chances playing at home, but Saint John’s College looms as a big obstacle. Neither Michaelhouse nor Grey should be discounted either in Pool D. Any of these teams is capable of upsetting a higher ranked side.
