Close neighbours and good rivals, Kearsney College and Westville Boys’ High, met for the second time this season on the football field on Saturday, but this time the action was at Kearsney.
In the first meeting of the two 1st XIs, Westville had put together a stunning performance, with pretty much everything going right for them but, this time, it was a far tougher challenge. In the end, they won by a three-goal margin, but only after netting a superb goal right on the final whistle.
Half-time
At half-time, Westville led by a goal scored from the penalty spot. In the second half, they doubled their lead before Kearsney found a sharp response from a corner to pull it back to 1-2.
With the home team pressing for an equaliser, Westville made them pay with a goal on the counter, before striking the knockout blow right at the end of the contest.
The results mostly favoured the visitors, including in the game of the day between the two under-14 B teams. It’s seldom one sees an 11-goal game decided by a single goal, but that’s what they produced, with Westville sneaking a 6-5 victory over their gallant opponents.
