There was much more at stake than a typical 1st team football match when Glenwood hosted Westville on Saturday afternoon. In memory of Glenwood old boy and former Bafana Bafana coach, Clive Barker, the two schools contested the Clive Barker Memorial Cup for the first time.
Barker, who passed away on 10 June, was one of the most popular South African national football coaches ever and, most notably, led Bafana Bafana to the African Cup of Nations title on home soil in 1996 – the only time in history that South Africa has been crowned the champions of Africa.
Honouring the legend
Pleasingly, the 1st XI match on a pristine looking Dixon’s did justice to the great man, delivering six goals, with the in-form visiting Griffin breaking open a 2-2 draw to eventually claim a 4-2 victory.
With the entire Glenwood school in attendance, and Westville Girls’ High also in action against Durban Girls’ High to raise awareness about femicide, it was a memorable occasion and a fitting tribute to a Glenwood legend.
A number of sponsors also ensured that it would be a special occasion, with Premier Foods, Nyala and Lil-lets getting behind the day, and Topline Manufacturers sponsoring a man of the match award.
Cracking games
There were many other cracking back-and-forth games, with the under-14 C contest delivering nine goals, and Westville coming away with a 5-4 victory. Glenwood teams twice recorded wins by four goals, while Westville managed that in three games.
The under-14 and under-15 age group results went the visitors’ way, but Glenwood edged the open age group matches, and the under-16 clashes ended up all square at two victories apiece.
