Hosts snag DHS u17 Sevens title, Northwood u15 champs, all the results

26 August 2023

The hosts, DHS, had to dig deep to overcome a dogged Michaelhouse team in the DHS Sevens Cup Final on Saturday.

After Michaelhouse’s Luke Davidson landed a do-or-die conversion to level the scores at 12-12, with regulation time having expired, the contest was decided in extra time.

It took a special effort from DHS flyer Adriano Jackson (in feature photo) to secure the title for the Horseflies. Hitting the gas, from his own 10-metre line, he first rounded a number of ‘House defenders on the right. Then, he cut back inside to evade the cover defenders before going over beneath the uprights for the winning sudden death score.

Plate Final

Westville and Saint Charles, who had met in the Cup Final of the Saint Charles Sevens, played for the Plate on this occasion, and it was the Griffin who secured a narrow 24-19 win.

Hilton College had shocked the in-form Westville side in the quarterfinals, winning 24-12, but they came up short against Michaelhouse for the second time in the tournament in the semi-finals, with the boys in red and white claiming a 26-10 victory. They had won 19-12 earlier in the day.

DHS, meanwhile, accounted for Northwood, recording a 24-10 win over the Knights, who had, in turn, ended Maritzburg College’s run at the title.

College opened the day with a clinical 26-12 win over Saint Charles, but they were well beaten by the same opposition when the teams met in the Plate semifinals, with Saints running away to a 40-19 victory.

Under-15s

College did, however, qualify for the final of the under-15 competition after beating Michaelhouse 14-0 in the semis. They took on Northwood for the title after the boys from the north of Durban beat Kearsney 21-12.

It came down to the last few seconds of the contest, with Northwood securing a telling turnover before going over under the poles to secure a 21-14 win.
