The Westville 1st football team turned in an astonishing performance against their neighbours, Kearsney College, on Bowden’s, on Saturday, with their deadly finishing resulting in an eye-opening 9-1 victory.
The Griffins made a sensational start, which saw them produce a three-goal barrage in next to no time at all. They also managed a number of simple tap-ins, thanks to the quality of their crossing, as Kearsney were stretched at the back by the intelligent play of the home side.
Whereas a team like Glenwood likes to crowd the goalkeeper at corner time, Westville goes in the opposite direction and opens up the box by having their players run in from deep. With quality deliveries, both from the set piece and from open play, Kearsney struggled to contest dangerous balls into the centre, and Westville made them pay.
Kearsney did well lower down in the open age group to claim their fair share of wins, but Westville, shaded the day overall, including take victories in the under-16 A, under-15 A and under-14A games.
The visitors might have lost big in the big game, but they did record the next biggest win, with their 5th side showing a keen eye for goal.
