Maritzburg College and DHS began playing football against one another long before they played their first rugby match. In 1889, the Raw Cup, the football trophy the great rivals contest, made its appearance. Rugby, meanwhile, was introduced to the Horseflies in 1910 by Headmaster AS Langley, who had previously taught at College.
On Saturday, in Pietermaritzburg, School took on College on Barns’ with the 134-year-old trophy up for grabs.
Penalty call
In a contest largely controlled by the defences, the home side looked as if they might go ahead after 10 minutes, but they had a good shout for a handball in the area rejected by the referee.
Instead, it was DHS striker Shangase who scored the one and only goal of the match five minutes from time, finishing coolly after exploiting a defensive slip.
It was very even in the under-16 and under-15 age groups but, although it was tight, DHS enjoyed a better day at the under-14 level.
