An interesting line-up of schools is set for action at the annual Kearsney Hockey Fives, backed by Belgotex Sport, which takes place on the school’s campus from Saturday, 6 August, to Monday, 8 August.
A proven recipe
The tournament features three sections, incorporating boys’ high schools, boys’ primary schools and, for the first time, girls’ high schools. It’s a similar format to the inaugural Kearsney Soccer Tournament, which was hosted during the mid-year holidays and proved to be a “brilliant success”.

There will be eight boys’ high school teams, six girls’ high school sides, and 12 primary school boys’ teams. See the fixtures below.
In the boys’ high school section, eight schools with excellent hockey pedigree will be in action and, where some schools might be challenged by their depth in the traditional form of the game, this is unlikely to be the case in fives. It’s promises to be all-out action, strength against strength.

Boys’ high schools
In the high school competition, Kearsney are joined by Michaelhouse, Clifton College, Westville Boys’ High and Hilton College, from their pool of traditional rivals, while Ashton International, from Ballito, will also be in on the action, along with Garsfontein and Saint Alban’s College from Pretoria.
Both of the Pretoria schools were in action at the Coastal Cup at the start of the season, hosted by Clifton College at the Riverside Sports Club.

The girls’ high schools include Thomas More College, Saint Mary’s DSG, Saint Anne’s Diocesan School, Saint Alban’s, Ashton International and Curro Hillcrest.
The largest section, for primary school boys, features Cowan House, Kloof Senior Primary, Ashton International, Saint Peter’s, Cordwalles, Westville Senior Primary, Highbury Prep, Bonisanani, Hillcrest Primary, Umhlali, Reddam Umhlanga and Winston Park.
As was the case in the Kearsney Soccer Tournament, the Hockey Fives provides an opportunity for elite competition and development, all wrapped into one.
Youth Olympic format
Introduced at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games, hockey fives features four field players and a goalkeeper in a fast-paced, skilful short form of the game.
Following those Games, held in Nanjing, China, hockey fives was part of the programme for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, but the next Youth Olympics, due to the impact of Covid-19, will take place in Dakar Senegal in 2026 only.
