History will prove that in 2023 history, as a subject, at Kearsney College was in a very healthy state. This follows an outstanding set of results in the SA National Senior History Olympiad, to go along with a superb set of results in the SA Junior History Olympiad.
Matthew Lamplough led the way in the Senior History Olympiad, receiving a Gold Certificate for finishing in the top 5 percent nationally.
Daniel Bothma and Jack White received Silver Certificates, after placing in the top 10 percent nationally, while Matthew Guson and Matthew Shepherd were Bronze Certificate winners, for finishing in the top 15 percent.
Towards the end of 2022, Kearsney’s Connor van Heerden, who is also a member of the 1st tennis team, finished joint first overall in the SA National Junior History Olympiad. He received a Platinum Certificate in recognition of his country-leading achievement.
Three boys – Jason Denekamp, Joshua-Peter Clark and Oliver Tubb – received Gold Certificates for their top 5 percent finishes, and Thomas Blomfield was awarded a Silver Certificate for placing within the top 10 percent nationwide.

“You’re History” winners
In February, at the “You’re History” Quiz, hosted by Clifton College, with 31 teams from nine schools competing, the Botha’s Hill boys’ Grade 11 team of Matthew Lamplough, Daniel Bothma and Jack White finished first which, it turns out, was not surprising given their achievement in the SA National Senior History Olympiad.
Their Grade 10 team placed fourth and their grade 9 line-up, which included Connor van Heerden, Jason Denekamp and Thomas Blomfield, all mentioned above, were third.
More recently, two Kearsney College boys, Matthew Behrens and Mukona Marageni, participated in the third round of the South African Mathematics Olympiad, which features only the top 100 candidates in the country.
