The boys of Hilton College, this past weekend, took on two outsized challenges through Sport for Lives to raise funds for two charities. Their efforts were richly rewarded.
Two 24-hour challenges were hosted, with the Tennis for Lives – https://sportforlives.org/campaigns/tennis-for-lives/ – initiative, led by the 1st tennis team, seeing boys and staff playing the game for a full day, non-stop, while the Swim for Lives – Swim For Lives – 24 hour Swim For Thandi House – Sport For Lives – challenge, led by the Hilton College Water Polo Club, attempted to swim over 2 000 lengths of the pool to improve upon the record the same group of boys set when they were in grade 9.
Goals
With a goal of playing at least 192 games of tennis, and raising R300 per game, the tennis players wanted to aim for even more than that and raise an ambitious R75 000. With 51 backers, they brought in an impressive R50 800.
Those funds will be provided to Footprints into Africa, a non-profit organisation, whose primary stated objective is “to grow and develop church leaders and preachers” in Africa.
The swimmers’ goal was to raise R25 000 for Thandi House, a non-profit foster home, located in Pietermaritzburg, which cares for abused and abandoned children.
They did themselves proud by bringing in R44 000, thanks to the generous support of 56 backers and their sponsors Hilton Quarry SuperSpar and Thirsti. This meant achieving 176% of their goal!
