At the end of 2022, Kearsney College was recognised as the top performing IEB school in KwaZulu-Natal. In March, the younger generation of Kearsney boys showed they’re cut from the same cloth by excelling in the first round of the South African Mathematics Olympiad. That success continued in the second round.
From there, Matthew Behrens (grade 9) and Mukona Marageni (grade 8) progressed to the third round, which was quite some achievement when one considers that only the top 100 candidates in South Africa write the round three paper.
Round three
For some, round three might sound extremely daunting – a four-hour paper, which was hosted at Kearsney on Wednesday – but, no doubt, the two Kearsney College boys look upon mathematics in a different light to many and they were up for the challenge. Now, the school waits to hear how they fared.
James Engelbrecht was Kearsney’s best placed senior in the Olympiad, and he ranked eighth in KwaZulu-Natal.
A reputation for excellence
The school has earned a reputation for excellence in mathematics, thanks to its consistently excellent results in the subject.

In the 2022 IEB exams, Kearsney’s average mathematics mark was 75 percent, with 46 percent of the school’s boys achieving A aggregates. That 46 percent mark was a huge 20 percent better than the overall national A aggregate mark of 26 percent.
It also marked the 12th year in succession that Kearsney’s mathematics results were roughly double the national average.
The school has also demonstrated its excellence through all spheres of academics, with notable achievements in 2023 being recorded in the SA Junior History Olympiad, too.
