More than 800 Maritzburg College boys and staff headed up to Gauteng on the weekend of 21/22 July for the school’s annual clash with Affies in a wide variety of sports.
Playing a long way from home is always a very demanding challenge, especially against a school with the sporting pedigree of Affies and, while the hosts dominated on the rugby field, a stirring victory by the College 1st XV – their first in Pretoria – was the story of the day. They were magnificent!
It was one of the most entertaining and excellent performances of the season by any school’s 1st XV. Needless to say, the drive back to Pietermaritzburg felt a whole lot better than it would have done before the main rugby match.

The Maritzburg College 1st XI dominated their match against Affies and worked their way into a 2-0 lead. Ultimately, though, they had to settle for a draw. College’s vaunted u16A team was held to a goalless draw, while Affies claimed the u14A honours.
