Northwood hosts clothing drive for fire victims

21 July 2023

Northwood School has put out a call for help for the community of the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement, which was struck by a devastating fire this past Sunday.

According to The Sowetan, 1 101 homes were gutted, and 1 710 adults and 647 children were left homeless. One person’s life was lost.

NGOs, including Gift of the Givers, Meals on Wheels and the Red Cross have been assisting with the supply of food, mattresses and blankets, among other things, but clothing is desperately needed.

Leading the way

Led by the Northwood’s Representative Council of Learners, a clothing drive will be held to help the Kennedy Road families stay warm in the cold winter months.

During Saturday’s big rugby derby against Glenwood High School – 22 July at Northwood – the RCL will oversee a collection point for donations. The clothing drive will then continue through the following week.

Northwood has asked not only for its school community to show its support, but also for the community of Durban North (and beyond) to help those in need.
