Northwood’s Arav Jugree continues to make a splash in the South African chess world. During the holidays, he finished in joint-first position at the Inter-provincial SA Schools Schools Spots Championship Tournament in Benoni after winning six of his seven games.
Two years ago, in 2021, Arav was crowned national champion in the under-13 age group. In Benoni, he showed that he still leads the way among his peers.
He has previously represented South Africa in the All Africa Youth Championships, where he was one of the top performers in his age group.
Arav began playing chess at the age of four and competed in his first formal chess tournament when he was in grade three.
Magnis Carlsen, the 32-year-old Norwegian grandmaster, who holds the highest ever rating in the history of the sport, is his chess hero.
