Day two of the Kearsney Soccer Tournament, played in ideal conditions on the school’s beautiful Botha’s Hill campus, produced a seismic shock when DHS qualified to face TuksSport High in the final.
The Durbanites had begun the event with a 0-6 shellacking at the hands of their opponents from Pretoria, but they were massively improved on Saturday, showing plenty of grit to claim victories over Siyajabula, Maqhutshana and Paul Roos.
Credit to the young team DHS rolled out, they raised their game a number of levels when the chips were down.
Kearsney beaten
TuksSport High produced a fine performance to defeat Kearsney College, who won three out of three on day one, 3-2 on Stott Field (and thanks to Robert Carpenter for a fantastic feature photo of a high-quality clash).
Both teams played good constructive football, but Tuks showed a fine cutting edge up front, which is what helped them get past a strong home team.
It was surprising, therefore, that TuksSport’s semi-final clash with Gqeberha’s impressive Urban Academy ended in a goalless draw. It was almost as tight in the penalty shootout, with TuksSport eventually triumphing 8-7 from the spot.
Clifton went down to Port Shepstone in the Plate semi-final, also from the penalty spot, but they came back to defeat Ashton Ballito in their second outing of the day with a confident performance.
