Day one of the Kearsney Soccer Tournament, results, YouTube Highlights

14 July 2023

Kearsney College showed hospitality to teams from around South Africa on the opening day of the inaugural Kearsney Soccer Tournament. However, they weren’t generous on the field, playing three and winning three to finish top of Group A.

The hosts opened with a 2-1 win over group runners-up, Paul Roos Gymnasium (see feature photo, courtesy of Robert Carpenter), and also overcame Ashton Ballito and Curro Grantleigh on a taxing first day of competition.

Group B

In Group B, DHS started slowly against TuksSport High School. The game had barely begun and it was already, pretty much, decided. The Horseflies fought back well in their second outing to defeat Port Shepstone High, even though the Durban side were reduced to 10 men by a sending-off.

School, though, will need to win against Siyajabula, who drew with TuksSport High School, in their last group game on Saturday morning, if they have designs on playing for the top places. They sport a negative goal difference, so a draw against Siyajabula would leave them on the outside looking in.

Group C

Clifton College, in Group C, started off strongly against Gqeberha’s Urban Academy and went 2-0 up. The Eastern Cape side, though, kept coming at Clifton and turned the match on its head, eventually running out 4-2 winners.

In their second match, though, Clifton dealt with Lebone II College from the North West.

Much like DHS, they’ll need a win to move on to compete for the top positions. That’s because their Saturday morning opposition, Maqhutshana Secondary, have a plus-two goal difference, compared to Clifton’s minus-one.
