All set for the inaugural Kearsney Soccer Tournament

10 July 2023

Running from 14 to 16 July, the inaugural Kearsney Soccer Tournament has an interesting make-up, with 28 schools – comprising 12 boys’ open teams, nine girls’ open teams and eight primary schools – set to participate. The line-up includes schools from KZN, Gauteng, the North West, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape.

“We have well over 400 boys and girls, both high schools and primary schools, participating in the tournament, from all over the country, and I would like to extend a special welcome to all the schools and supporters from outside KwaZulu-Natal,” Kearsney College Headmaster Patrick Lees said in a welcome message.

Teams

The boys’ open teams include KZN’s Kearsney College, DHS, Clifton College, Siyajabula High, Maqhutshane Secondary, Curro Grantleigh, Ashton Ballito, Port Shepstone High, the Western Cape’s Paul Roos, Urban Academy from the Eastern Cape, Tuks Sport High School from Gauteng, and Lebone II College of the Royal Bafokeng from the North West.

The girls’ field is made up of KZN’s Durban Girls’ High, Danville Park Girls, Safa Ethekwini, Ashton Ballito, Curro Hillcrest, Saint Mary’s DSG, Edendale Technical High, and Saint Anne’s Diocesan College, who will be joined by Lebone II College of the Royal Bafokeng.

All of the primary school teams are from KZN, including Hillcrest Primary, Kloof Senior Primary, Highbury, John Wesley, Atholl Heights, Ashton Ballito and Merchiston.

About more than results

Lees said he expected strong competition on the fields of Kearsney College, but there was a lot more than results that mattered about the event: “Playing in these matches allows you to meet and interact with many new friends,” Lees wrote.

“A special bond develops between all the boys and girls, a bond which you must cherish for the rest of your lives. Memories and friendships will be forged that will stand the test of time in the years ahead – be it during your school years, tertiary or adult lives.”
